Meet Wylie: A dedicated seasonal staff member at St. John’s Ministries

Wylie reflects on his connection to the work, the unique impact of St. John’s, and the vital role the organization plays in serving those in need.

Q: What motivates you to return each season?

“I’m motivated by the chance to be someone that individuals experiencing homelessness can rely on. It’s rewarding to see our guests feel seen, heard, and supported. I return not just for the guests, but for myself as well. There’s always something to learn, and our guests bring a wealth of stories and life experiences. It’s a privilege to witness firsthand.”

Q: How does working at St. John’s compare to other jobs?

“Each night at the Men’s Shelter brings something new, which keeps the work from feeling monotonous. What sets St. John’s apart is that we welcome individuals facing complex challenges, like addiction tied to mental health issues or past trauma. With the right support, those who struggle can navigate these challenges and ultimately reach their full potential.”

Q: Why do you use the word “guest”?

“We use the word guest intentionally, as it reflects that their stay with us is temporary. We want them to feel comfortable and cared for, but we also want them to want more for themselves. What we are ultimately trying to do is help many of our guests get to tomorrow.”

Q: How does St. John’s build community?

“Our guests play a key role in building the sense of community here. Everyone takes on daily chores and follows shared expectations, which creates a sense of belonging and responsibility. There are times when we believe in our guests before they believe in themselves.”

Seasonal staff members like Wylie bring vital commitment, care, and stability to our shelters, creating an environment where individuals experiencing homelessness feel safe and valued.
