Meet Wylie: A dedicated seasonal staff member at St. John’s Ministries

Wylie reflects on his connection to the work, the unique impact of St. John’s, and the vital role the organization plays in serving those in need.

Q: What motivates you to return each season?

“I’m motivated by the chance to be someone that individuals experiencing homelessness can rely on. It’s rewarding to see our guests feel seen, heard, and supported. I return not just for the guests, but for myself as well. There’s always something to learn, and our guests bring a wealth of stories and life experiences. It’s a privilege to witness firsthand.”

Q: How does working at St. John’s compare to other jobs?

“Each night at the Men’s Shelter brings something new, which keeps the work from feeling monotonous. What sets St. John’s apart is that we welcome individuals facing complex challenges, like addiction tied to mental health issues or past trauma. With the right support, those who struggle can navigate these challenges and ultimately reach their full potential.”

Q: Why do you use the word “guest”?

“We use the word guest intentionally, as it reflects that their stay with us is temporary. We want them to feel comfortable and cared for, but we also want them to want more for themselves. What we are ultimately trying to do is help many of our guests get to tomorrow.”

Q: How does St. John’s build community?

“Our guests play a key role in building the sense of community here. Everyone takes on daily chores and follows shared expectations, which creates a sense of belonging and responsibility. There are times when we believe in our guests before they believe in themselves.”

Seasonal staff members like Wylie bring vital commitment, care, and stability to our shelters, creating an environment where individuals experiencing homelessness feel safe and valued.

From abuse to empowerment: Guided by faith and St. John’s Ministries

Heather is a former guest at St. John’s Ministries and frequent visitor at the Micah Center. Her strength, faith, and determination are inspiring. We are graced by Heather’s courage in sharing her story:

My entry into St. John’s Ministries came when I was leaving an abusive relationship. My son told me about St. John’s, and at the time, other shelters had waiting lists. I needed to leave immediately. My abuser had nearly killed me — my face had been completely black from the violence. I needed a safe place where I knew he couldn’t reach me.

The community doesn’t always understand that people in situations like mine are not all bad. We all have a story. I was in that relationship for over ten years before I came to the shelter.

I’ll always be grateful for St. John’s because they’ve been nothing but good to me. I remember my first night at the shelter — I was scared. But the staff really helped. They could tell I was nervous and kept checking in to make sure I was okay. Their kindness made me feel safe.

Leaving that relationship made me a stronger woman. I realized I don’t need a spouse to make things work — I can do this on my own. Right now I’m working two part-time jobs.

One thing I’ve learned is that what really matters is what I think and what God thinks. God has done a lot for me. I pray throughout the day and carry religious mementos with me.

I love the woman I am now because I have a voice, and I use it. I used to be silent and walk on eggshells, but now I stand strong.

The last year of my relationship was so scary, but I’m proud of myself for leaving. I’m incredibly grateful to those who support St. John’s Ministries. If this place didn’t exist, I don’t know where I’d be.

The number of women served has grown significantly since we opened the women-only shelter three years ago. Many have faced deep traumas and there is a strong desire to move forward. For every way you contribute — big or small — to our mission and impact, thank you.

Rebuilding my life through St. John’s Ministries

Elliot, who was served by St. John’s Ministries while experiencing homelessness, has since found success and stability. Before moving to Chicago, he visited the Micah Center to say goodbye and express his gratitude. He generously shared his story:

When I first came to St. John’s Ministries, I was struggling — not only with housing, but in a dark place, frustrated and unsure how to break free from the cycle I had fallen into. Looking back, I can now see how much of a lifeline this place truly was.

I never imagined I’d be homeless. When I found myself with nowhere else to turn, St. John’s Ministries was there for me. This place offered more than a shelter — it offered hope, dignity, and the chance to rebuild.

One of the biggest game-changers for me was the Micah Center. It’s where I could look for jobs, check emails, and connect with the outside world. The Micah Center also provided me a mailing address — this is huge for those who are homeless. Without an address, a person can’t get an updated ID, benefits, or insurance.

What really made a difference was the people. The staff don’t just “do their jobs” — they truly care. The case manager connection made all the difference. They knew what steps to take, from paperwork to finding meals and navigating social services. It wasn’t just information; it was real guidance.

One of my biggest challenges was dealing with my alcoholism. St. John’s connected me to a detox program, helped me get into a 12-week recovery program at the Jackie Nitschke Center, and supported me as I moved into sober living.

Since my time at St. John’s, I’ve turned my life around. One of my biggest achievements has been composing music for a mid-sized play. Recently, I was honored with a prestigious Chicago award for my work.

To the donors and volunteers who make this place possible — thank you. You gave me a chance to rewrite my story, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful.

Elliot, like the more than 350 individuals served so far this shelter season, had tremendous potential while also experiencing homelessness. The support of the St. John’s Ministries family helps unlock that potential, empowering individuals like Elliot to thrive. We are grateful to all our supporters for making a lasting impact through your generosity and care.
